The client and the digital opportunity

ResMed is a global leader in digital health technologies and cloud-connected medical devices for sleep apnea, COPD and other chronic respiratory conditions. Operating in more than 140 countries, the organization focuses on improving patient outcomes through connected healthcare solutions.

Its Japan website has two closely linked responsibilities: it must educate patients and healthcare professionals about sleep and respiratory health, and it must also support e-commerce by helping visitors purchase CPAP equipment and accessories. That combination made the website more than a conventional online shop. It needed to communicate sensitive, technical information clearly while preserving trust, usability and a straightforward path to purchase.

The challenge: simplify without losing substance

Before the project, the central issue was poor user experience. Detailed medical and educational content had to coexist with a broad product catalogue, yet visitors needed to reach the right information or product without feeling overwhelmed.

What the experience needed to solve

Make complex treatment information easier for patients and healthcare professionals to understand.

Organize a broad range of products, educational resources and supporting content into intuitive paths.

Strengthen confidence through clear navigation, consistent layouts and a professional digital presence.

Create an efficient purchasing journey for CPAP equipment and accessories.

Improve website speed and the overall mobile experience.

Showcase products and services more effectively while supporting multilingual and localized content.

Give the marketing team a scalable system for updating products, resources and campaigns.

THE BIGGEST DESIGN PROBLEM

How do you present highly technical healthcare information alongside an e-commerce experience without creating cognitive overload? Our answer was to structure the website around user intent, then use reusable design and development patterns to keep every journey consistent.

Our approach: audit, structure, design and build

Inboundsys treated the engagement as a connected experience-design and Shopify engineering project. The work began with a website audit, followed by UX design, responsive design and the creation of a design system. This established a shared foundation for page hierarchy, navigation, reusable components and mobile behavior before development was completed.

1. Audit the existing experience

Reviewed the website from the perspective of patients, healthcare professionals and shoppers.

Identified friction in navigation, content organization, product discovery and page usability.

Used the audit to prioritize clearer information architecture, mobile optimization and reusable page structures.

2. Reframe the information architecture

Grouped educational resources and product categories around intuitive visitor journeys.

Created clearer routes from treatment education to relevant products and supporting resources.

Reduced the effort required to move between learning, evaluating options and purchasing.

Limit additional Shopify apps and third-party scripts to those with a clear commercial purpose.

Review custom JavaScript after feature changes and regression-test the calculator, menu, search, forms, cart, and checkout.

Reserve media dimensions and retest responsive layouts to prevent avoidable layout movement.

Monitor performance after theme, app, tracking, or content changes not only at launch.

3. Establish a consistent design system

Applied consistent hierarchy, spacing, component behavior and content presentation across page types.

Designed patterns that could accommodate both detailed healthcare content and commerce-focused information.

Made responsive behavior part of the component system, not a final-stage adjustment.

How we built the Shopify website

The solution used custom Shopify theme development, Shopify Liquid, responsive design, and custom sections and templates. Rather than hard coding every page as a one-off layout, Inboundsys created reusable Shopify building blocks. This produced a website that is consistent for visitors and practical for ResMed Japan’s internal team to manage.

Reusable architecture adopted

Reusable Shopify sections for repeatable content and campaign layouts.

SEO-friendly templates for product, educational and landing-page content.

Custom sections and templates built in Shopify Liquid for structured, maintainable publishing.

A scalable page system that lets the marketing team update products, resources, campaigns and localized content efficiently.

Consistent component rules so future pages can retain the same user experience and brand presentation.

Calls to action and e-commerce functionality

No separate third-party integrations were recorded for this project. The implementation therefore concentrated on the Shopify experience itself: its theme, content structure, product presentation, forms, search, navigation and e-commerce journey.

Performance optimization and Core Web Vitals readiness

Performance was addressed through the areas documented in the project record: image optimization, mobile optimization and SEO-friendly implementation. These choices support the same user-experience outcomes measured by Google’s Core Web Vitals fast content delivery, responsive interactions and visual stability while keeping the site practical to maintain.

Optimization methods adopted

Optimized images so product and educational visuals can load more efficiently without sacrificing their purpose.

Built responsive layouts that deliver appropriate presentation across mobile, tablet and desktop.

Used reusable sections and templates to avoid unnecessary page-by-page complexity and keep the theme scalable.

Improved content organization and navigation so visitors spend less time searching and reach useful content sooner.

Applied mobile optimization to product pages, educational content, forms and key actions.

Completed browser and responsive testing to identify layout or behavior issues before delivery.

Carried out post-launch testing so the released experience could be checked in its live context.

How this supports Google Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP):

image optimization and more efficient page structures help important content appear sooner.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP):

focused Shopify components and clear interactions help pages respond predictably when users navigate, search, submit forms or select products.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS):

responsive component rules and consistent page structures help content retain a stable layout as it loads.

MEASUREMENT NOTE

The project record confirms faster page speed as an achieved result, but it does not provide before-and-after PageSpeed or Core Web Vitals scores. We have therefore described the implemented optimization methods and outcomes without inventing numerical claims.

Responsive design: one clear journey on every screen

Responsive design was a central project activity and a key feature of the completed website. This mattered because a healthcare-commerce visitor may begin by researching a condition on a mobile phone, compare products later a larger screen and return to complete an enquiry or purchase.

Responsive decisions that improved usability

Layouts adapt to mobile, tablet and desktop rather than forcing desktop content into a smaller viewport.

Navigation, mega-menu content and search remain accessible across device sizes.

Product information and educational content preserve a clear reading hierarchy on smaller screens.

Calls to action and lead-capture forms remain visible, understandable and easier to complete.

Reusable responsive sections create consistent behavior across new products, resources and campaigns.

The result is not simply a website that “fits” a phone. It is a website designed to reduce friction for mobile visitors while maintaining the depth and credibility expected from a global healthcare organization.

How the website was built to generate leads and sales

The website supports conversion by connecting education, product discovery and action. Visitors are not pushed immediately toward a purchase without context. Instead, the experience helps them understand treatment options, locate the relevant product or resource, and then act through a clear call to action, form or e-commerce pathway.

Conversion methods built into the experience

Lead-capture forms create a direct route for visitors who need assistance or additional information.

Clear calls to action guide users from educational content to the most relevant next step.

Improved product pages help visitors understand and evaluate CPAP equipment and accessories.

The product catalogue, search and mega menu reduce discovery friction.

Landing pages provide focused destinations for campaigns, services or specific audience needs.

Responsive design makes enquiry and purchase actions usable for visitors arriving on mobile devices.

Better content organization strengthens trust, which is essential when decisions involve healthcare products.

CONVERSION PRINCIPLE

Educate first, make discovery easy, then present a clear next action. This approach supports both patient confidence and commercial performance.

SEO foundations for sustainable discovery

Search visibility was supported through practical on-page and template-level work. The project included meta titles and descriptions, image optimization and mobile optimization. Together with SEO-friendly templates and clearer information architecture, these improvements make product and educational content easier for search engines to interpret and easier for people to use after they arrive.

Meta titles and descriptions create clearer search-result signals for important pages.

Image optimization supports performance and improves the delivery of visual content.

Mobile optimization aligns the experience with mobile-first search and user expectations.

Structured, reusable templates help maintain consistency as new content is published.

Clearer product and resource pathways strengthen internal discoverability and engagement.

Quality assurance and delivery

A healthcare e-commerce website must work consistently, look polished. Inboundsys completed a structured validation and delivery cycle covering design, responsiveness, browsers, forms, SEO and the live experience.

Reported outcomes

Modernized brand image

Faster page speed

Increased organic traffic

Increased leads

Exact traffic, conversion and performance figures were marked as available in the source form, but no numerical values or linked reports were supplied. For that reason, this case study reports the verified directional outcomes and avoids unsupported percentages or scores.

Long-term value

The strongest long-term result is the combination of a better front-end experience and a more manageable publishing system. ResMed Japan can continue expanding products, educational resources, campaigns and localized content without rebuilding the experience from the ground up each time.

Scalable Shopify components reduce dependence on one-off page development.

Consistent templates protect usability and brand quality as the website grows.

SEO-friendly structures support ongoing organic visibility.

Responsive patterns keep future content usable across devices.

Clear education-to-commerce journeys support continued lead generation and online sales.

Why this is a strong Inboundsys case study

This project demonstrates Inboundsys’ ability to build an enterprise healthcare and e-commerce experience where education, product management, usability and conversion must work together. By combining Shopify flexibility, responsive development, SEO best practices and scalable content management, the team delivered a platform that supports patient education, strengthens brand credibility and enables long-term digital growth for a global healthcare organization.

The best methods adopted

Start with an experience audit so development priorities reflect real user friction.

Organize technical healthcare content around user intent, not internal content ownership.

Connect education, product discovery and conversion instead of treating them as separate journeys.

Use reusable Shopify sections and templates so quality and responsiveness scale with the website.

Build mobile behavior into the design system from the beginning.

Combine image, mobile and SEO optimization with functional testing and post-launch validation.

Give the internal marketing team a maintainable system for future products, campaigns and localized content.

IN SUMMARY

Inboundsys transformed ResMed Japan’s Shopify presence into a clearer, faster and more scalable healthcare-commerce experience designed to help people learn, find the right products and take action across devices.
