E-commerce websites are booming in this niche that is dominated by Amazon and Walmart. Small e-commerce stores are springing up across the World Wide Web, which presents a lot of competition. SEO is simply that when you search a query on a search engine – your website appears in the search result if that content is available on your site.

1. Keyword Research
When a person searches something by typing a keyword on Google, the search engine will show a list of results. So that’s where the role of keyword comes from. First of all, you should be clear about your product then research the keyword related to that product.
Use Ahref or Ubersuggest to research the keyword. This will give you a list of keywords – some will have a high CPC rate some will have low competition. You have to pick the keyword which has low competition and high CPC.
2. Structure of The Site Around Your Keyword
Site structure is related to navigation on your website. The ideal number of characters in your URL for a particular product should not be more than 160. That means you can go for 3 level architecture and keep it simple. Users should be comfortable and it should be easy for them to search for their desired products on your website.
For example – www.xyz.com/categories/subcatery/product
Using this rather than www.xyz.com/twidkfh/twowreidf is very efficient.
3. Structure of URL
URL structure should be extremely easy to read and give a clear indication of what the user is looking for. There are a few tips –
- Keep it easy and simple.
- Focus the URL around a particular keyword.
- Always set the URL in a way that shows proper hierarchy (i.e. which page is inside which page).
- Use hyphens to separate words.
Here’s an example - www.example.com/mobile-phones
(category-name)/samsung-galaxy-a10(product-name)
4. Optimize Your Description
Optimizing a description means that you put your keyword in such a way that your article is highlighted and it should be eye-catchy. Suppose you search for a white shirt – Google gives you a list of search results. You can observe there is something written under the links too. Well, that’s the description, and optimizing your description will amp up the rating of your page very much thus generating you more traffic.
The product you are specializing for – search that keyword and compare the description of top 5 results – you will find that the smart description is getting higher ranking thus giving it a top position. Try to use the focus keyword in the description 2 times and use long-tail keywords along with action keywords.
5. Product and Category Description
SEO is all about standing out of the crowd on search engines with better ranking. So try to be creative and give each of your product categories a unique tagline and description which pertains to the highlighted keyword and could rank you better.
Search Engines take your descriptions into account while indexing the pages and they look for ease – if your description is good and accurate according to your product – then they index the page higher than your competitor.
6. Fix Issues dealing with Duplicate Content
Time to time audit your website pages if they have any duplicate content. Firstly, search engines rank your website lower if they find that redundancy is there and secondly it takes up space on the server which confuses the user.
To find duplicate content you can use Ahref’s site audit tool which will give you a detailed description of duplicate content on your site. Try to fix this as soon as possible.
7. Orphaned Pages lowers your image
In e-commerce websites whether you want it or not some pages will become orphaned or too deep into the architecture. The only problem here is that the pages which you want to rank higher or those pages which are important should not be more than 3-clicks away. This means you have to find these pages and fix them.
Use Ahref site audit to find the deep pages and then change their link such that they are a few clicks away from the home page.
8. Keep Your Site Away from Keyword Cannibalization
Many people make this mistake – where they use the same keyword across multiple pages on their website. This creates a problem for the search engine to locate a particular page for that keyword.
Sometimes, Google ignores these websites and stops indexing. so keep your site away from these errors.
9. Analyzing Your Backlinks
Simple work in SEO – higher the backlinks, better your image in the eyes of search engines. But technicality – there are few different kinds of backlinks – no-follow backlinks, do follow backlinks, content backlinks, broken backlinks, image backlinks, etc. And all of these are necessary, well except broken backlinks (those you have to regularly check and repair).
So go to Ahref or Ubersuggest and search for backlinks and look for your profile. Then there is a simple trick to building more backlinks – search backlinks your competitors are using and use them for your backlinks. Yes, everyone does it and so should you.
10. Page Speed
If your website has everything – fine keywords, good structure but doesn’t open quickly then users will not stay at your site. Search Engines consider this data while performing crawling on your site. Page Speed is really necessary and especially for the mobile version as the number of mobile users is far greater than desktop-users. You can study your page-speed report in Google Analytics and there you will find tips to improve your page report and use them.
